International Congress on Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology Successfully Concluded in Cancun, Mexico

2025-10-23

The International Congress on Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology (2025) was successfully convened in Cancun, Mexico, from September 13th to 17th. The congress assembled approximately 2,500 experts, clinicians, and researchers worldwide for comprehensive and in-depth scientific exchange on recent advancements in ultrasonography within obstetrics and gynecology. The scientific program encompassed several critical domains, including sonographic assessment of fetal growth; early detection and surveillance of congenital heart defects and central nervous system anomalies; prenatal diagnosis of intrauterine infections; clinical applications of intrapartum ultrasonography; and multidisciplinary approaches to managing medical complications in pregnancy. Keynote sessions further explored evolving trends in fetal medicine, such as the potential applications of gene therapy, imaging evaluation of gynecological malignancies, and the integration of ultrasonography in reproductive genetics. Dissemination of innovative research and clinical experience was facilitated through plenary lectures, specialized symposia, and poster presentations, collectively reflecting the current research priorities and technological trajectory of the field.

Deputy Chief Physician Sun Liqun presented seminal work on FGR-associated cardiovascular remodeling and placental microvascular flow imaging. Utilizing advanced fetal cardiovascular imaging techniques, her research investigated the correlation between fetal adaptive responses to chronic placental insufficiency and resultant cardiac changes. Her data suggest that abnormal fetal cardiac loading conditions induce right ventricular remodeling, potentially constituting a key mechanistic link between suboptimal intrauterine environments and the development of both short- and long-term cardiovascular sequelae. Furthermore, she presented collaborative research with Hubei Maternal and Child Health Hospital on placental microvascular flow imaging. The findings indicate a significant association between the Placental Microvascular Perfusion Index and both early-onset and late-onset Fetal Growth Restriction (FGR). Notably, quantitative assessment of placental perfusion during the early third trimester (specifically 28 to 31⁺⁶ weeks of gestation) demonstrated superior predictive value for subsequent FGR development.

Participation in this congress effectively highlighted the substantial scientific contributions and innovative research capacity of Zhejiang University Women's Hospital at the forefront of obstetric and gynecologic science. The delegation successfully disseminated a series of transformative findings in fetal medicine, ultrasound imaging, and gynecologic oncology, thereby augmenting the institution's international academic profile. The extensive interactions and critical dialogue with global leaders in the field provided a robust foundation for fostering sustained international collaboration, integrating worldwide scientific expertise, and guiding future disciplinary innovation, thereby inaugurating a significant phase in the hospital's global scientific engagement.
