Department Introduction

Established in 1958, Pathology Department is the largest obstetric and gynecological pathological diagnosis and research center in Zhejiang Province. We have 38 staff members including two professors, seven senior pathologists, twelve residents and fourteen technicians.

In recent five years, more than 40,000 surgical pathological reports and 70,000 cytological reports are signed out for patients annually. The department also receives more than 5,000 cases for consultation from all over China each year. As one of the largest Obstetrics and Gynecology pathology center, we enjoyed a high prestige and have a great influence on this field in China.

The department provides pathological diagnosis of general surgical specimen, breast puncture specimen, frozen sections, perinatal autopsy, placental pathology, cervical/vaginal cytological TBS diagnosis, and searching for visual component of amniotic fluid in blood samples. The department has more than 100 immunohis to chemical antibodies detection for tumor differential diagnosis and prognosis prediction. New technical methods, including fluorescence in situ hybridization (HER-2 detection by fluorescence in situ hybridization) have been set up in our department to meet clinical requirements and research.

Our department has the highest accuracy and lowest error rate for pathological diagnoses and we have been appraised as an excellent unit in pathology quality control assessment annually.

The department placed a large emphasis on standardized training for the residents. As a national standardized training base for clinicopathological residents, we provide professional training on gynecologic surgical pathology for residents both inside and outside the province. Over the past 10 years, more than 50 pathologists have received specialty training on gynecologic surgical pathology in our department. We take the role of directing cervical cancer and breast cancer screening program in Zhejiang Province. We also have established communication with the Department of Pathology of Johns Hopkins University and the Department of Pathology of Indiana University.

In recent years, our department undertook more than 10 projects including 3 projects from National Natural Science Foundation of China. We published numbers of highly influential SCI papers in world-class journals including Int J Cancer, Gynecol Oncol, Int J Gynecol Pathol, Hum Pathol etc. Some professors act as reviewers in pathologic journals, including Diag Pathol, Pathol Res Prac, BMJ Open, Chinese Journal of Pathology etc. Our research interests including Gestational Trophoblastic Tumor, correlation between obesity and endometrial cancer, identification and transformation of gynecological tumor markers.

We set up the class of new pathological progress in gynecology and obstetrics nationwide two times in recent years.

We hold Sino-USA Gynecologic Pathology Symposium in 2018.
