Department Introduction

Blood transfusion department of Women’s hospital, School of Medicine Zhejiang University, which integrates medical treatment, teaching, scientific research, provides technical service of pretransfusion laboratory detecting and clinical technical guidance of blood transfusion treatment, as well as the clinical supply and coordination of blood products. Under the leadership of the hospital clinical blood management committee, blood transfusion department assists the medical affairs department in managing and supervising the overall quality of clinical blood. At present, the department has six technicians, including one senior technician, 3 intermediate technicians and 2 junior technicians. The department consists of four groups: quality control group, blood transfusion consulting group, scientific research and teaching management group, and reagent consumables group. The department has established a complete system and standardized operating procedures to provide medical services for outpatient and inpatient including clinical blood transfusion, consultation of blood transfusion safety and reasonable blood transfusion, especiallyin blood transfusion ofpostpartum hemorrhage rescue, maternal blood management of rare blood type, of neonatal hemolytic disease screening and blood transfusion treatment.

Our pretransfusion testing services include ABO, Rh blood type identification, cross-matching, irregular antibody screening, antibody titer determination, difficult blood type identification, platelet antibody detection and prenatal or postnatal detection of the neonatal hemolysis. Our medical technical services include the techniques of patient blood management, multidisciplinary diagnosis and treatment, preoperative autologous blood donation. We also carry out composition transfusion, and composition transfusion rate has achieved over 99.00%.

In the future, we will pay more attention to and develop transfusion treatment technologies such as advanced autologous component monotherapy, plasma exchange and therapeutic monotherapy, hematopoietic stem cell collection and so on.

Our department is the national lab-testing training base for standardized training of resident physicians. It is responsible for the education program of blood transfusion for trainees in the training base. 3-5 trainees are trained annually to ensure that they have a good command of the management of blood transfusion and emergency rescue.

The blood transfusion department has published many papers in SCI journals, presided over many provincial-level research projects, and its main research directions include transfusion and fetal medicine, cell transplantation and repair, and the interdisciplinary research of transfusion and other disciplines.
