Department Introduction

Introduction of Obstetrics Unit 3

1.About Us

As one of obstetric units in Women’s Hospital, Obstetric Unit 3, with 42 faculty members and 68 beds, strives to providing high-quality obstetric medical services, including pregnancy and delivery management, obstetric complications (gestational diabetes, pre-eclampsia, placenta previa, placenta abruption, cervical incompetence and management of recurrence abortion after pregnancy), fetal abnormality.

Our Unit has about 240 deliveries and receives 23% of total difficult and severe cases monthly with 38.7-46.6% of cesarean section rate. Our clinical specialties are management of cervical incompetence during pregnancy, recurrent abortion, and fetal growth restriction.

2.Treatment & Service

Our unit is specialized in diagnosis and management of preterm delivery (especially cervical incompetence induced), recurrent abortion, fetal growth restriction, and prenatal consultation of fetal abnormality.

Cervical incompetence during pregnancy: we performed 22 cases of emergent cervical cerclage, 3 of which were twin pregnancy.Surgery success rate was close to 100%, and delivery rate after 28 weeks was 36.36%(8/22), survival rate was 64% (16/25)

Delivery management of recurrent spontaneous abortion: In the past year, we launched prenatal and delivery management for 323 RSA patients. Among them, there are 152 cases of normal delivery, 151 cases of cesarean section delivery and 20 cases of forceps delivery.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Fetal Growth RestrictionFGR:In the past year, we launched 200 cases of FGR cases.

New surgical procedure of pernicious placenta previa (PPP): Over the past year, we have handled 48 PPP cases with new surgical procedure which is capable to reserve uterine.  The average bleeding amount is 400-5500ml, and there is no case of hysterectomy.

Highlights of nursing service: We are committed toproviding to management and supervision of tertiary care, sticking to the safety system of nursing quality and carrying out high-quality care projects actively

The written safety hazard report of 60 reports per year, 100% safety education rate, the wear rate of maternal elastic stocking in bed rest preventing from miscarriage and surgery is over 95%, manage nearly 300 difficult and severe cases each year, take care of patients who experience new procedures, such as external version for breech position, emergent cervical cerclage. Carry out high-quality care projects actively especially ear acupoint pressing beans combined with breast acupoint stimulation to promote milk secretion, broadcast disease and maternal and child care knowledge through the cloud follow-up system, and conduct a satisfaction questionnaire at the same time.

3. The Milestone of Expertise

Our unit, consisting of a young and potential medical team, aims to break through traditional obstetric tactics so as to achieve better outcomes of specific obstetric problems, milestones include:

  • Emergent cervical cerclage with the balloon tamponade for pregnant patients with a dilated cervix and bulging fetal membranes.
  • New surgical procedure of pernicious placenta previa to prevent from hysterectomia.
  • Applied exploration of low molecular heparin in obstetric diseases, such as recurrent spontaneous abortion, fetal growth restriction, pre-eclampsia, and its therapeutic evaluation on these diseases.
  • External version for breech position: it is a critical treatment to enhance normal delivery and decrease cesarean section delivery.

4. Education & Training

Our faculty is recognized as great physicians in  the obstetrics field, and they are in charge of multiple courses, such as problem-based learning courses for 8-year program students, obstetrics and gynecology courses for 5-year and 8-year program students. Overall, we have 40 8-year program students, 300 5-year program students and 300 intern students every year.

Residency Training is the main and critical training in Obstetrics Department at Women’s Hospital. Our aim is to assure the graduate physicians are prepared to provide primary prenatal and postnatal care for women as well as advanced obstetric intervention, which offer good opportunities for the residents to improve their skills and handle the challenges in their career.

5. Research

Our department is dedicated to advancing obstetric care in every aspect.

Directions: Our primary areas of research include

fetal medicine,

preterm delivery prediction,

gestational complications:

and offspring safety.

After-birth follow-up and prognosis evaluation for different systems of fetal normality; Study in the pathogenesis of pregnancy complications;

Exploration of prediction and new treatment on pre-term delivery;

Research in the pathogenesis of fetal-origin diseases and birth cohort

Major Research Achievement: So far, our department undertakes one program of National Nature Science Foundation, one project of 13th-Five-Year Plan for the National Research Specific Program, 2 projects supported by Health Bureau of Zhejiang Province, and takes role in one program supported by Research Specific Program of Zhejiang Province as the major participants. We have already published 20 SCI papers, and the highest impact factor is over 4.0.

Further Research Direction: birth cohort, prediction for Pre-term Delivery, Study in the pathogenesis of fetal-origin diseases and pregnancy complications.
